Love your local community centre
When was the last time you visited your local community centre? Community centres play an important role in the lives of local people, providing a safe and friendly environment to connect in your neighbourhood. They offer the opportunity to learn new skills, take part in free and low-cost activities, access key services and much more. From fitness classes and venue hire to social events and after clubs, community centres truly are the heart of the community.
Here’s a reminder some of the fantastic centres in the Royal Docks and a snippet of what’s on offer:
Beckton Community Centre
The new look Beckton Community Centre is impressive! It’s been transformed following a recent £1.4m refurbishment from Newham Council. The much-loved centre has been completely renovated and now features several green energy solutions ranging from LED lighting, air source heat pumps, roof insulation, double-glazed windows, and more. Accessibility has also been improved with better lighting, easier access to the building for those with reduced mobility, hearing loops and improvements to bathrooms. The centre also offers room and hall hire complete with a commercial kitchen, a weekly timetable of community events and even a kiln for pottery classes.

Tate Institute
Once a thriving social hub for the people of Silvertown, Tate Institute was built by Henry Tate in 1887 for his sugar factory workers. Left empty for decades, the derelict building fell into disrepair with leaking roofs and various other issues until in the early 2000s it sadly closed its doors. However following Newham Council funding, it’s now on the road to restoration and repair led by ReSpace, a social enterprise that takes beloved derelict buildings and brings them back to life for use by local people.
Working with the local community, ReSpace aim to revive Tate Institute as an arts hub with an enterprise hub, workshops and event spaces, creative studios and a community garden. The ongoing restorations is reusing wasted resources, second-hand furniture, leftover building materials from housing developers. So far, the community garden hosts community events, and the schedule is gearing up over the summer for an exciting launch later this year. To stay up to date follow Respace on Instagram.
