Meet the Dockers: The Hair 4 Newham Team

As part of the Compressor House opening, we caught up with Kemi Bamishaye, Latoya Louis, La’vern Williams, and Portia Louis, the team behind Hair 4 Newham: Fashion & Finance, a bold and exciting event for the Compressor House Community Takeover. Representing three local organisations, Distinctive Solutions CIC, Nurture Academy CIC, and Island Rain — they’ve come together to blend empowerment, creativity, and practical support.

In this Meet the Dockers interview we hear about their event, their thoughts on Compressor House, and being part of a creative movement in the Royal Docks.

Can you tell us about yourselves and any connections to the Royal Docks?
We are Distinctive Solutions CIC, Nurture Academy CIC, and Island Rain - three organisations passionate about collaboration, empowerment, and creativity. Together, we bring expertise in leadership, life skills, financial literacy, and cultural expression. We were all born and raised in East London, and the Royal Docks has been part of our story. Being involved in this new chapter for the area allows us to give back to the community we care deeply about.

Why do you think the reopening of Compressor House as a cultural and community hub is important for the local community?
Compressor House offers more than just a venue — it’s an accessible, inclusive, and inspiring space where people can come together. [GC1] For local residents, it provides opportunities to connect, learn, and celebrate creativity. For us as organisations, it’s a chance to co-create meaningful programmes that reflect the real needs of the community.

You’re hosting an event during the Community Takeover. Can you tell us what it’s about and what visitors can expect?
We are hosting Hair 4 Newham: Fashion & Finance, a vibrant community event that blends style with substance. Visitors can enjoy upcycled fashion, hands-on haircare tips, and practical financial know-how. It’s a space to celebrate self-expression while exploring ways to manage money more effectively. Expect energy, colour, and a strong sense of connection.

What do you hope people take away from your event?
Our hope is that everyone leaves with great memories, new friendships, and practical tools they can use. Whether it’s feeling more confident about managing money, learning a new hair technique, or being inspired by sustainable fashion, we want the day to spark long-term positive change as well as immediate joy.

What inspired you to get involved in this week of community-led programming?

We’re all always keen to collaborate, harnessing our various skill sets to make a positive difference in Newham. Each of our organisations brings something unique from training, and creativity to youth engagement. Working together has been a powerful experience. The support from Newham and the Royal Docks team has also been key in shaping our ideas into a bold, community-driven event.

Compressor House offers more than just a venue — it’s an accessible, inclusive, and inspiring space where people can come together.

Why do you think it’s important for local people to lead and shape events like this?
Because local people know their community best. We understand the challenges and opportunities, and we know how to meet people where they are. When events are led by the community, they feel authentic, inclusive, and relevant. That’s what makes them impactful.

What are your hopes for how Compressor House will be used by the community moving forward?
It would be great to see Compressor House become a regular hub for creativity and collaboration. A place where regular events bring people together, local businesses showcase their work, and workshops provide practical support. In time, it can grow into a space recognised across East London as a centre for learning, innovation, and celebration.

What role do you see Compressor House playing in the future of the Royal Docks area?
Compressor House has the potential to be a cornerstone of community life in the Royal Docks. Its versatility means it can host everything from cultural showcases to training programmes, giving people a welcoming space to learn, share, and connect.

What does it mean to you for your event to be part of Royal Docks Originals?
It means a great deal to us. Being part of Royal Docks Originals is a great opportunity to showcase the work of our organisations and highlight the impact we want to make in Newham and beyond. We have worked hard as a team, and to be part of Royal Docks Original feels both affirming and exciting.

How do you feel Royal Docks Originals can contribute to building a creative future locally? What are you most looking forward to at Royal Docks Originals?
Royal Docks Originals shines a light on the creativity that already exists locally while giving it space to grow. It connects people, inspires new ideas, and encourages collaboration. We are looking forward to seeing the diversity of events and the way they reflect the talent and resilience of our community.

Sum Royal Docks Originals up in one word.

Innovative!
