River as Witness with Be Manzini
Experience an evening of live poetry aboard the historic sailing barge Raybel, exploring the Thames as archive, storyteller and witness to centuries of change.
Part of the Culture Cargo programme, River as Witness is a live poetry performance by writer and speaker Be Manzini exploring the river not simply as a route for trade and transport, but as a keeper of memory.
Through a series of original poems, audiences will be invited to reflect on stories of migration, labour, ecology, cultural exchange, belonging and environmental justice. The performance considers the Thames as a living body, carrying traces of the people, communities and histories connected to it.
The event will end in the premiere of a new improvised poem, created in dialogue with a voyage on Raybel, offering a unique response to the river and its surroundings.
Be Manzini is a writer, speaker and founder of the Newham Poetry Prize. Her work has been commissioned by organisations including Theatre Royal Stratford East, Hoxton Hall, Autograph and Tamasha, and she has performed with leading poetry organisations including Apples & Snakes.
