Meet the Docker: James Kaguima

James Kaguima is a social entrepreneur and community organiser born and raised in Newham. From the Royal Docks Youth Network to founding the award-winning Skate Cabal, James has played a key role in shaping inclusive, creative opportunities across the Royal Docks.

As a Creative Connector and member of the Docks Local Panel, he’s helped co-produce community-led events and continues to champion local talent through projects like Docks Factor, part of Royal Docks Originals. We caught up with James to hear more about his journey, his hopes for the area, his work on Docks Factor, and why creativity rooted in community matters.

Tell us about your journey into community work and how your connection to the Royal Docks

I’m a social entrepreneur, designer, and community organiser from Newham. My journey with the Royal Docks began through the Youth Network, working with the GLA to ensure local voices were part of regeneration plans. That led me to the Expressway Incubator, where I pitched a project to the Mayor of Newham during lockdown, a key moment in shaping my path.

I now sit on the Docks Local Panel, helping shape creative, community-led events across the area. I also founded Skate Cabal, a social enterprise using roller skating to connect people and promote well-being, and serve on the board of Elevate, supporting young leaders and grassroots projects.

All of this has strengthened my belief in the power of culture, creativity, and community to drive meaningful change.

Why did you join the Dock Local Panel?

I joined the Dock Local Panel to represent young people and help shape creative projects that reflect the diversity of Newham. Growing up here, I wanted to make sure local voices are part of culture-led regeneration.

The panel aligns with my values of inclusion and social impact, and it’s a great way to stay connected to the Royal Docks creative scene while supporting projects that uplift and inspire the community.

What have been your highlights in your role programming or as part of the Dock Local Panel?

One of my biggest highlights on the Dock Local Panel has been shaping cultural programming that truly reflects the community. A standout was co-producing The Winter Get Together at the Social Convention — a joyful event with music, storytelling, and activities for all ages that brought Newham families together.

Another key highlight is developing Docks Factor, celebrating local talents. Being part of its creation, from concept to delivery, has been fulfilling, and I’m excited to improve its promotion to attract more participants.

What stands out most is how the panel puts local people at the heart of commissioning, fostering ownership, collaboration, and space for our ideas and cultures to thrive. Working with such a passionate, diverse group has been energising.

Serving on the panel has been a huge growth opportunity, expanding my network and connecting me with local artists, organisers, and leaders committed to the Royal Docks’ cultural future.

Culture-led regeneration can centre local people as creators, curators, and leaders

How has the role benefited you?

It’s sharpened my collaborative skills, especially in co-producing events and shaping inclusive programming with community at the heart. I’ve seen firsthand how our ideas feed directly into real cultural projects across the area.

Being on the panel has also made me feel more rooted in Newham’s cultural future and deepened my commitment to inclusive, impactful work. Most importantly, it’s shown me that culture-led regeneration can centre local people as creators, curators, and leaders — something I’ll continue to champion.
